Whats best for cleaning an ornate cast iron fire ?

I have an working cast iron fireplace i've been lighting it a lot more than usual due to the cold weather. Now the black part looks dull and the silver parts are tarnished due to the heat. I've tried silver polish but that's not really helping. Is it ruined forever ?
