Modern hot air balloons have a trademark upside down tear drop shape becasue...?

...they have a small payload hanging from a large, buoyant bladder. A point load on a spherical surface pulls it into a teardrop shape. Balloon manufacturers are well aware of this, and build the bladder in a teardrop shape already, to more evenly distribute the load in the fabric.
